parmigiana reggiano cheese

I bought a five pound piece of parmiana reggiano cheese, stored it in the back of my
fridge..and forgot about it. While cleaning the fridge ONE YEAR later, I found and remembered my cheese; except that it is now as hard as a paving stone. Does anyone know
how to soften my cheese without doing it much harm?
