Bread Making Help

Good Morning all! I have tried three times to make a bread recipe given to me by a friend. The first two times it didn't rise at all. I attribute that to the fact that I used Lactaid milk, which contains lactase. So I figure it just killed off all the sugar action, hence no rise. But the third time I used "real" milk, and it did rise.... it took about three hours. I'm using Rapid Rise yeast, which I've never used before. I've made bread lots of times and am pretty sure my milk temp was good. Before I invest more time and ingredients, does anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks so much for your help and this board.
