Corn Starch in Devil's Food Layer Cake

A recipe for Devil's Food Layer Cake is posted on epicurean.com. One of the ingredients called for is 4 1/2 tablespoons of corn starch. I have done a fair amount of baking over the years, but never added corn starch to a cake recipe. Can anyone tell me why corn starch would be called for...and more particularly, why such a large amount.
